A Prayer of Nonviolence and Peace, in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday

(Posted on January 12, 2011 by Joe LaGuardia by Wordpress.com)

This prayer is based on a portion of John Drear’s book, entitled, Put Down Your Sword: Answering the Gospel Call of Creative Nonviolence, (Grand Rapids: William Eerdmans, 2008), pp. 18-19.

Lord Jesus the Christ,

In light of praise, of mourning, of intercession, set our minds on the…

Resurrection–the vindication of nonviolence over violence–amid our bloody history proves that active nonviolence, steadfast service, and public peacemaking are the will of Your Father.  You, Jesus, committed to civil disobedience when you rose from the dead.  Roman soldiers guarded the tomb to make sure you stayed dead, but once again, you broke the imperial laws of death.

You, O nonviolent Jesus, have risen above injustice, poverty, and violence.  You have risen despite war.  Executed yourself, and rose from the death penalty.  You have risen beyond the power of nuclear weapons, racism, sexism, starvation, global warming, and violence itself.  You have risen above the culture of death.

You call us to bold announcement–You call us to prove it.  We prove it with the boldness of our own lives, our nonviolent resistance to the forces of death.

Which is to say, we must share the peacemaking life with You.  We must confront death and its metaphors.  For we too are headed for resurrection–our survival is already guaranteed.  We’re free to live beyond the culture of death.  We’re free to reject violence and poverty and war.

You allow us to prove we’re resurrection people by giving us the courage to put down our swords and beat them into plowshares.  By loving our enemies.  By carrying on your work of nonviolent resistance against injustice.  By speaking out, and by persisting despite the obstacles, the opposition, the apparent futility, knowing that the outcome, in God’s hands, is assured.

We’re free to live life to the full now, knowing that eternal life has already begun.  We’re free to resist the forces of death, renounce fear, and refuse to give in to despair.

We thank you; we thank you; we thank you.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

ALL THINGS
(Written by Unknown)

All things work together for good
to them that love the Lord,
to those who answer His calling,
according to His Word.

Once in the hands of Jesus
faith is the walk of life;
it causes joy in the sunshine,
and delivers us through all strife.

That means every single thing
that happens to you or me
is part of God's mighty plan
to prepare us for eternity.

Though not conscious of His presence,
we engage the shield of faith,
knowing God has provided
the circumstance, time and place.

Nothing that happens can hurt us;
we know He is there by our side;
for all things work for our good,
to perfect and prepare His bride.

(Romans 8:28 NIV )
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose."

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER:

Our Lord and our God, we thank You for another perfect day that You have made.  It may be cold, snowing, raining or the sun may be shinning--no matter what it's a beautiful day and it's all good.   As we go throughout this day help us to remember our God made this day, so our God can handle anything this day brings.  We ask that You will give us the courage to rest on Your promise that You will be with us always, including today.  And Lord, since You're with us and You are greater than he who is in the world, we expect the great.    We expect goodness and mercy to follow us, we expect Your love to guide us and we expect Your peace to keep us.   God, through faith we expect something great will happen to us today and we're praising You in advance for opening doors, for healing, for deliverance, for restoration, for providing --God we praise You in advance for the victory today, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Blessings,

TUESDAY MORNING PRAYER:

Lord, for Your goodness and mercy we say, thank You.  For waking us early this morning with a sound mind, movement of our limbs, worship in our hearts and praise on our lips to the most high God, we say, thank You!  God, this morning we confess, there is none like You; We have tried relationships, material things and so much more and found, there is none like You!  You are the only true and living God and You're worthy of all the praise, so we offer praise to You and we thank You for being faithful--Lord You are the only constant in our lives and we thank You for being our best friend.   Lord, we ask that You will help us to trust You in every situation and give us the wisdom to place no one before You.  God, distractions may come today, but we ask that You will give us the strength to resist the enemy and expect him to flee from us, just as Your Word says.  We praise You Lord for this beautiful day that You have made and we shall rejoice and be glad in it, no matter what, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Blessings,

MONDAY MORNING PRAYER:

Our Father, our God, our Lord, our Savior, our King, our Friend, we thank You for another beautiful Monday that You have made.  It's Monday and many have to go to work and although we would rather lay in bed, we are grateful to You for blessing us with our jobs.  We thank You Lord for blessing us with transportation to get to our jobs.  Lord, we have so much to be thankful for and our desire is to not take anything for granted, we thank You for blessing us with the blessings we're standing in the need of.   God, when faced with a situation that has the potential of robbing us of our joy or stealing our peace, help us to focus on Your goodness, kindness, mercy and grace and know there is victory in Jesus, always.   Help us to remember, our attitude will determine our altitude, if we can think it, through Christ we can achieve it.  Today is a good day and we shall think good thoughts and let nothing distract us from giving praise to You, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Blessings,

FRIDAY MORNING INSPIRATION:

Imagine that you had won the following prize in a contest:   Each morning your bank would deposit $86,400.00 in your private account for your use.

However, this prize has rules, just as any game has certain rules.  The first set of rules would be: Everything that you didn't spend during each day would be taken away from you.  You can not simply transfer money into some other account.
You can only spend it.

Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400.00 for that day.

The second set of rules:   The bank can end the game without warning; at any time it can say, it’s over, the game is over

It can close the account and you will not receive a new one.   What would you personally do?

You would buy anything and everything you wanted, right?   Not only for yourself, but for all people you love, right?

Even for people you don't know, because you couldn't possibly spend it all on yourself, right?   You would try to
spend every cent, and use it all, right?
   ACTUALLY This GAME is REALITY!

Each of us is in possession of such a magical bank. We just can't seem to see it.  The MAGICAL BANK is TIME!

Each morning we awaken to receive 86,400 seconds as a gift of life, and when we go to sleep at night, any remaining time

is NOT credited to us.  What we haven't lived up that day is forever lost.  Yesterday is forever gone.

Each morning the account is refilled, but GOD can dissolve your account at any time....WITHOUT WARNING.

SO, what will YOU do with your 86,400 seconds?  Those seconds are worth so much more than the same amount in dollars.

Think about that, and always think of this:  Enjoy every second of your life, because time races by so much quicker than you think.

So take care of yourself, be Happy, Love Deeply and enjoy life!

Here's wishing you a wonderfully beautiful day.   Start spending.    Your life is a deposit from GOD!

Blessings,

Bishop Willie Williams

WEDNESDAY MORNING PRAYER:

Oh Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Thy Name!  From the rising of the sun, until the going down of the same, Your Name is to be praised!   Great is Thy faithfulness towards us, thank You Lord!  We thank You for another beautiful day.  We thank You Lord for keeping us throughout the night, for protecting our family and friends and for supplying all of our needs.  We thank You Lord because we know there is no failure in You and all that You do, You do well.  Help us to say in all things, "It is well with my soul."   We can say it is well because we know You loved us so much that You sent Your Son to die for our sins, and that love to us shall never end, nor will it ever loose it's power.   So Father we thank You for a great day today.  We thank You for opening our eyes to see Your beauty.  We thank You for the love that shall run from heart to heart and for the many smiles that will make someone else smile.  We thank You Lord for Your ever presence in our lives and because You live in us, we shall rejoice and be glad in this day, in Jesus Name, Amen.

Blessings,

Bishop Willie Williams
