SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say a student has admitted she hung a noose in the library at the University of California, San Diego.
The revelation on Friday has further ignited racial tensions on the campus two weeks after an off-campus party mocked Black History Month.
Hundreds of people rallied on campus to discourage racial intolerance
after the noose was discovered.
Campus police say the noose was found hanging from a bookshelf Thursday night. A University of California statement says a female student has claimed she and two other students were responsible. It was unclear if she will be charged with a hate crime.
The school has been in turmoil over an off-campus "Compton Cookout" party organized by some students that urged people to dress as ghetto stereotypes.
