Gil Scott-Heron Dies; Influential Poet/Musician Helped Inspire Rap

May 27, 2011 | 7:49 pm

Gil Scott-Heron, whose late 1960s and early '70s poetry set to rhythmic jazz music, especially "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," was one of the most important and obvious inspirations for rap music, has died, according to his British publisher.

The poet and musician, who had long struggled with drug addiction, had in the past two years returned into the public eye with an acclaimed solo recording, "I'm New Here," and a follow-up remix album done by Jamie xx of the British group the XX. Scott-Heron was 62.

Last year the New Yorker published a reverent but heartbreaking profile of Scott-Heron by Alec Wilkinson. Written after Scott-Heron had recorded "I'm New Here" but after he had relapsed and was smoking crack openly in front of the reporter, the story traced his rise, his fall and his influence.

In an interview for the feature, bassist Ron Carter, who played on "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," described Scott-Heron's allure: "He wasn't a great singer, but with that voice, if he had whispered it would have been dynamic. It was a voice like you would have for Shakespeare."

In the same story, which is behind a paywall here, rapper Chuck D. discusses the role Scott-Heron played in the birth of rap: "You can go into the beat poets and [Allen] Ginsberg and [Bob] Dylan, but Gil Scott-Heron is the manifestation of the modern world. He and the Last Poets set the stage for everyone else. In what way necessary? Well, if you try and make pancakes and you ain't got the water, the milk or the eggs, you're trying to do something you can't. In combining music with the word, from the voice on down, you follow the template he laid out. His rapping is rhythmic. Some of it's songs. It's punchy, and all those qualities are still used today."

The Last Final Oprah Winfrey Talk Show Is Broadcast

Oprah Winfrey dedicated a "love letter" of thanks to the audience during her last appearance. Footage courtesy of Harpo Productions.

Veteran talk show host Oprah Winfrey's final programme broadcast on Wednesday after 25 years on the air.

The 57-year-old, widely regarded as one of the world's most influential women, pre-recorded the show on Tuesday.

The talk show queen was seen alone on stage, telling viewers how much they mean to her.

The finale follows a two-day special farewell show at the United Center in Chicago, which Madonna and Beyonce took part in.

Fans who watched Winfrey record the final show said she had tears in her eyes as she bid farewell one last time.

"She said, 'This isn't goodbye. This is until we meet again'," said audience member Amy Korin.

"[There was] a lot of crying and hugs," Ms Korin added.

The Oprah Winfrey Show, which is syndicated in 145 countries, redefined the talk show genre and made Winfrey one of the most influential women in the US as well as the wealthiest black woman in the world.

The star, who recently relinquished her position as Forbes magazine's most powerful celebrity to Lady Gaga, announced in November 2009 she would be leaving.

At the time she told audience members the final season would "knock your socks off."

On her 25th and final series she was filmed dancing on stage with John Travolta and took an entire audience to film in Australia.

Other season highlights included interviews with President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, former President George W Bush and Michael Jackson's family.

The double episodes filmed in front of 13,000 fans went out earlier this week and saw Tom Cruise, Aretha Franklin, Tom Hanks and Stevie Wonder pay tribute to the presenter.

In January, Winfrey launched her own TV network, which will offer round-the-clock lifestyle programmes.

The channel is called OWN, or the Oprah Winfrey Network and is a joint venture with the Discovery channels.

Beyoncé Helps Revive The Billboard Music Awards

(Associated Press, Sunday, May 22, 2011)

After five years of dormancy since 2006, the Billboard Music Awards were revived Sunday, May 22, 2011 with a major dose of star power.

Rihanna got the show off to a steamy start, wearing a skimpy leather outfit for her hit song “S&M,” and was joined at the end of the number by Britney Spears, who appears on a remix on the track.

Taylor Swift won the evening’s first award, as top album artist, behind the multimillion sales for “Speak Now.”

“The impact of an album is all determined by the fans,” she told the audience. “You’ve just given me another reason to be completely in love with you.”

Other award winners included Justin Bieber (digital artist) and the Black Eyed Peas (top duo/group).

Houston-born Beyoncé received a special Millennium Award for her career achievements: The 29-year-old phenomenon was lauded in a video by an array of legends and luminaries, including Stevie Wonder, Barbara Streisand, Bono, Lady Gaga and first lady Michelle Obama.

“This is a moment I have to soak in because it’s gonna be — and it is — one of the best moments of my life,” Beyoncé said after getting the award from her mother, Tina Knowles.

Beyoncé also performed her new song, “Run the World (Girls).”

Parents Tina and Mathew Knowles, First Lady Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and more sang Beyonce's praises during a special tribute to the former Destiny's Child frontwoman. Beyonce was honored with Billboard's Millennium Award at just 29-years-old, but that doesn't mean she hasn't earned the respect of some legendary performers.

During a prepackaged segment that aired just before Beyonce took the stage on Sunday night (May 22), Barbra Streisand, Bono and even Stevie Wonder shared their thoughts on the "Run the World (Girls)" singer.

"Beyonce has made history and she's not even 30 yet," Stevie Wonder said. "She is able to go many different places but keep still that class and I like that."

"In addition to being just a beautiful young woman, she's been a role model and a powerful presence for young girls and women all around the world," Michelle Obama added. "I'm very proud of her."

Lady Gaga weighed in, telling Beyonce: "You are so much more than just a pop star or an icon. You represent the dream."

Possibly the most unexpected Beyonce fan to come out of the woodwork this evening was the legendary Barbara Streisand, who said: "Great performers have a sound and style that is all their own. And that's why so many people love Beyonce. And so do I."

U2 frontman Bono added, "She makes songs that will live forever."

Beyonce was honored with the actual hardware by her own mother, Tina Knowles, during the live broadcast. During her acceptance speech, she thanked not only her parents, but former Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams as well as original Destiny's Child members LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. Much to our excitement, she also gave a shoutout to her "best friend" and husband Jay-Z, saying "I love me some Jay-Z."

This year marks the Billboard Awards’ rebirth. The Billboard Awards had been a staple since 1989, but gave out what appeared to be its last award in 2006. This year, the show was brought back.

It was held in Las Vegas, broadcast live on ABC and hosted by “The Hangover 2’” star Ken Jeong.

The Billboard Music Awards are given out to music’s most popular artists. The finalists and winners are determined by their rank on the Billboard charts and their “social and streaming activity.”

Winners included:

-Album Artist of the Year – Taylor Swift

-Digital Artist of the Year – Justin Bieber

(PEOPLE) -- Tamera Mowry got her dream wedding on Sunday when she married Fox News Channel correspondent Adam Housley in Napa Valley.

The "Sister, Sister" star, 32, and Housley, 39, tied the knot at an inn and vineyard surrounded by 300 guests. Mowry wore a wedding gown by Carolina Herrera as she exchanged traditional vows with Housley.

"I've always wanted an outdoor wedding with lots of flowers," Mowry tells PEOPLE of the day planned by event planner Mindy Weiss. "I feel so lucky to have this beautiful day marrying my best friend."

Among the bride's eight bridesmaids were maid of honor Andrea Regalado and Mowry's twin sister and matron of honor Tia Mowry.

Housley and his eight groomsmen, including brother and best man Arik, wore tuxedos and Converse sneakers.

"I feel so blessed to be marrying such an amazing man," says Mowry. Adds Housley: "Tamera is beautiful inside out."

During the ceremony, performed by pastor Dudley Rutherford, the couple presented their parents with long stemmed roses.

"We wanted to honor them, because without their love and support we wouldn't be the people we are today," Mowry explains.

For the reception, Mowry changed into a two-piece ensemble by Dolce & Gabbana before joining the guests for a sit-down dinner that includes a four-tiered wedding cake by Sweetie Pies.

For a sophisticated yet rustic wine-country look, event designer Eden Rodriguez decorated wooden farm tables with pale pink and white hydrangeas and roses, olive branches with olives and hundreds of white candles.

For the first dance, the newlyweds will dance to Journey's "Faithfully" before surprising their guests with a performance to LL Cool J's "Going Back to Cali."

After a third outfit change by the bride -- this time into a dress by Herve Legera -- the schedule called for an after-party inside a barrel room with dancing to a DJ from San Francisco's KMEL radio station.

Late night snacks include a taco truck and dessert from Sift cupcakes.

"You can tell they're best friends," says Weiss of the newlyweds. "They have a great mutual respect for one another."

Mowry, who starred with sister Tia on "Sister, Sister," next appears on the reality series "Tia & Tamera Take 2" this summer on the Style Network.
