Hi Tawnette!

No, I didn't get any autographs.  Even though Bill Cosby and all the stars that visited were STARS, the real stars to me were the people I went to school with.  Silly me--those autographs may have been worth some  $$ now, but---oh well.  I was just enjoying life as a teenager, Compton California, in that era.  I don't know if I was a social butterfly, but I can say I was trying to be one.

I'm glad you enjoyed my stories...!

My God, so many memories!

You folks who have been posting are younger than I am...I am of the class of 1970- "Je Asesada" (the Awakening Generation).  We were the first class of the 70's!

Now, on to the memories:

My running buddies were Brenda Clay, Linda Christmas, Lynn Henderson, Phyllis Grant, Jackie Harper, Karen Evans, David Irons, John Myrick, Eric Roberts, to name a few.  I had crushes on a bunch of guys---Ted Moss, Alton Colbert, Jessie Howard---I'm namin' names, folks!

The best thing I remember about my years at Centennial were the parties!  If there wasn't a school dance, somebody was giving a house party, and we danced ALL THE TIME!  Everybody was in shape, because we were constantly in motion---dancing, walking to and fro each others houses.  The parties were the best.  Those were simpler times, when you could go to a party and not worry about fights, shooting, etc.  I'm grateful that I grew up in the era I did.

And the MUSIC!  The music was the bomb, and was the soundtrack of my youth.

As far as classes, and academics:

Mr. Woodson's English Class- 10th Grade.  I always loved writing, and English, and Mr. Woodson was an excellent teacher, very motivating.  Although I was a smart kid, school really didn't interest me---I was more into the 'social' aspects ;-)!  But I did love Mr. Woodson's English Class.

Also, 12th Grade, Mrs. Glatt.  She would have "salons" at her house on Sundays.  I would go to these discussions, complete with guest speakers, with Steven Brooks, my boyfriend at the time.  Mrs. Glatt lived in one of those beach cities---Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach---one of those.  So it was always a treat to go to her house because we'd have fun at the beach afterwards.

Miss Goldberg's class, senior year, was another that I remember.  Also, Annual Staff (Judi Davis), Mr. Milanez's English Class, and Ms. McCoy, 6th period gym.  I could tell you a story about that class, but I won't! ;-).

!!

I remember Junior year (1968-69) there were many bomb threats, so we'd wind up spending most of the day in the bleachers.  That's when we (my group of friends) learned to ditch school---after all, who wants to sit in the bleachers all day?  We'd sneak out the back way and go to Linda Christmas' house, play records (45's--you guys remember those?) and have an impromptu party.  Fun, Fun, Fun!  We weren't bad---just mischievous teenagers!

I remember when Hugh Masekela, The Seven Souls, The Temptations, The Young Hearts, Oscar Brown Jr. and Jean Pace (Judy Pace's big sis), and others came to entertain us at Centennial, in the gym.  Bill Cosby and his wife would come too.  Bill Cosby was part of a basketball team that would come once or twice a year.  This was when Bill was a popular TV star in "I Spy".

In terms of the neighborhood memories, I have many.  I saw Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Tammi Terrell, and the Delfonics (among others) at Dooto's Music Center on Central, down the street from Centennial.  Woodley Lewis' Sportsman Bowl was another popular hangout that we'd hit walking home from school.

There are so many memories that are eluding me now, but I'm sure I'll return to share them another time on this great page!

Thanks Tawnette!!

A thought came to my mind early today. Do you remember when kids pants were "high water" or what we use to call "flooding".  Now those were the days. I was looking through some of my old photos and my brothers pants were up there Girl. I started laughing my head off because he had a big grin on his face back then. Girl back-in-the-day that was considered stylin' you could not tell those guys that they were not sharp. I don't really remember if too many girls wearing the flooding pants but maybe they did; but the boys use to always have them on. Its amazing and so funny how some of those clothing "fads" come and go!!

Also do you remember the bell bottom pants? and the narrow straight leg or skinny leg jeans? All of those crazy styles have come and gone (but) I'm sure that they will eventually come back around. And some have never left.

Oh yeah, what about the Cascade wigs that young ladies wore, remember them? I was a bridesmaid in my neighbors Lanita & Hubert Williams wedding in 1974 and we as bridesmaids had to wear the Cascade wig on top of our heads. That was the very first wedding that I was asked to be in, I was 16 yrs. old. Child I thought that I was grown on that day until my Mom burst my bubble and found me drinking a little bit of champagne and laughing and talking to some older guy at the Reception. She took that drink out of my hands and drove me home. Girl those bubbles had gone straight to my head. (smile....) Now that was a Classic Moment. My Mom and I still have a good laugh about that!!

Well Tawnette that's all for now I'll post more later when I remember something else.

Love and Blessings, Phoebe
